Our love affair with having cats as a pet dates back many years. Being a cat owner is an enjoyable venture in life. Read these tips to get the most enjoyment out of your cat.
Groom your cat. Cats need to be combed or brushed regularly. This helps them keep their precious coat properly clean at all times. It also reduces their shedding and hairballs. Regularly grooming your cat will help keep it and your home looking great.
Older cats will appreciate a heated bed; you can use a heated tile to create one! You can heat a terracotta tile in the oven at 200 degrees for about 15-20 minutes. Place it in an older towel and place it underneath of the feline’s bed. Replace it every three hours or so.
If your cat is female, then ensure you spay her as soon as you can. You may believe that this is unnecessary if your cat stays inside all the time; however, cats almost always find a way to get outside, especially when they are in heat. When this occurs, your cat could get pregnant. You can prevent this by spaying or neutering your cat.
Cats are generally nocturnal. This refers to the fact that they are usually more active at night. Close your bedroom door if your cat is driving you nuts at night. This will keep them from attacking your toes.
Prevent crystals from forming in the urine of male cats with the right diet. Passing stones or crystals hurts and can cost you a ton in vet bills if they don’t come out naturally. Try to find a cat food that has a low level of magnesium. The best way to find out is to read the label. Poultry products are typically lower in magnesium than fish products.
While usually cats make great pets for kids, younger kids may be too rough with them. Tell them how to be gentle. Show them what activities are appropriate and how to pick them up. The bones of a cat are weaker than a dogs, therefore, they should be handled with care.
Reconsider having an outdoor cat. It can be unsafe. Your cat may get fleas or have other problems. Other animals, cars and people can hurt your cat. Cage in an area for a cat in your backyard if they must go outside.
Cats enjoy being high up. Allow them the space they need to feel safe while checking their world out. If a cat tower is not ideal, a simple shelf that does not have any breakable items can work. Make it extra comfortable by adding a blanket or cushion.
Your cat should be acclimated to a carrier as a kitten. Punishment affects cats differently from dogs. Most of the time, it is better to use positive reinforcement. Place the open carrier in an area that your cat visits often and outfit it with a favorite toy and blanket. In time, the cat will head inside and be happy. It will then be easier to transport the cat in the carrier.
Drinking Fountain
Get your cat a drinking fountain. Cats normally look to drink from running water. This is true in the wild or at home. Cats usually like to drink from a water stream. In fact, many cats like drinking from faucets more than from their water bowls. Installing a drinking fountain for your cat is a more eco-friendly way to provide it with some running water.
Feed canned food to your cat. Dry food is less expensive, but canned food provides more benefits. They have more water, protein and fat too. If your cat is getting older, canned food is easier to chew as well. Talk to your vet, but canned food is generally superior for your cat.
Keep a collar with ID on your cat. This is even true for indoor cats. Cats are inquisitive and will explore an open door or window if it is presented to them. Tags with your veterinarian’s info and your contact number should be worn. This is also essential if they have specific medical needs.
Cats can make incredible household pets. You have to work hard to keep them healthy and entertained. Keep these tips in mind as you take care of your cat. Your cat will show you gratitude.
