An organic garden requires your most astute and attentive care to thrive. With knowledge, your gardening skill will improve dramatically. Following organic horticulture practices will result in tastier fruits and vegetables, as well as happier plants. Use this advice to have your organic garden become the best around.
Sod should be laid properly. The soil requires preparation before sod can be laid. Get rid of weeds and tilth the soil finely. Make sure the soil is packed firmly and even. The soil should always receive adequate moisture. You want the sod laid down in staggered rows, and the joints to be offset from each other. Press the sod down firmly so that the surface is flat and even. If there are gaps remaining, fill them with a bit of soil. Keep the sod moist and avoid walking on it until it is well-rooted, usually two to three weeks.
Bulbs planted in the spring can flower all the way into summer. Bulbs are hardy, easy to grow into flowers, and will blossom for several years. Plant bulbs that will bloom at various intervals to ensure beautiful flowers are growing in your garden all year long.
Do you enjoy fresh mint, but don’t like how they engulf your garden in their growth? Contain their growth with a garden container or large pot instead. If you prefer, you can even place the container in the ground, but the pot’s walls will prevent the mint from spreading and being a nuisance in your garden.
Always fertilize your garden. Manure is a great garden additive, but it is important that you choose a manure that has been composted commercially so that there is less of a risk of pathogens. Although there are plenty of fertilizer choices, don’t be concerned with which one you use; just be sure to use one.
If you are going to grow peas, start them inside rather then planting them outdoors. If you plant them inside, they might germinate more effectively. Seeds grown indoors are much more resistant to diseases and damage done by pests. You will be able to transfer the seedlings outdoors after they become better established.
Try to relax with gardening. There are a wide variety of things you can do to release stress and relax. Horticulture is a great way to just kick back, chill out, and enjoy your time with nature. It is not prohibitively expensive, and has numerous benefits. The joy of eating food you created as well as enjoying the beauty of your garden is the best return of all.
Heather is a magnet for friendly insects. Heather is great for getting bees to stop by at the beginning of spring, as heather plants have nectar available early in the season. Because heather beds require very little maintenance, they often become the home of spiders, ground beetles, and other insects that can benefit your garden. Because of this, don’t forget to protect your hands when pruning heather beds.
An old laundry basket works great for gathering produce from your garden. The basket strains the produce as well as stores it while you are going through your garden. The basket won’t be affected by the water and it will drain right off as though it were poured into a large sieve.
When creating a compost pile, use dried plant materials and green plants in equal parts. Green plant material consists of spent flowers, veggie and fruit waste, leaves, weeds, and grass clippings. For the dry end of the spectrum, think of things like paper and cardboard, sawdust, hay, etc. Charcoal, meat, ashes or other diseased plants should not be included in a compost pile.
The simple beer trap is still one of the best methods of ridding your organic garden of slugs. Bury a glass jar in your garden so that its open mouth is level with the top of the soil. Next, fill up the jar with beer until there is around one inch between the liquid level and the jar top. Slugs are attracted by the beer and won’t be able to exit the jar once they enter.
You should use wood that is untreated, brick or stone when building the raised bed. Any wood you use needs to be untreated and resistant to rot. Examples of good woods include cedar, cypress, and locust. In a vegetable garden, never use treated wood, as the chemicals can leach out into the soil and food crops. If you have used treated lumber, line your beds with plastic.
Adjust your watering to the season and climate. The amount of water a plant needs depends on the soil type, time of day and the water’s quality. Overzealous watering in an already humid climate can lead to leaf fungus. Instead, water the roots only.
Over-watering your plants is not healthy because too much water may inhibit the roots from getting nutrients out of the soil. Check the weather forecast before you water any of your outdoor plants to see if rain is expected that day. You can skip watering for an entire day if rain is on the way.
